the market report : Kelly Makortoff

I’ve been getting to know Kelly Makortoff quite well these last few weeks as we both are normally found vending at the same summer markets. Kelly is an up-and-coming designer, she’s created her own line of lovely reversible purses, coin and card pouches using vintage or recycled fabrics and old buttons. She also makes awesome crinkly cotton, hand-dyed scarves (they are ideal for covering up in the sun and then for cooler summer nights). She’s based in Krestova and says that she learned to sew using a sewing machine at a very young age, her grandmother being a great inspiration for her. Kelly likes simple designs, things that are versatile and easy to use every day.

I bought myself a small shoulder pouch, it’s just the right size for cards, phone and some cash - perfect for traveling light this summer. All her creations are washable and each are totally one-of-a-kind.

the market report : Chelsey Freyta Designs

During the summer, here in Nelson there are various street markets happening around town on different days of the week. I take part in one on Wednesdays, on Hall Street. Last week I started documenting and taking photos of my market mates, alongside their wares - and the plan for me is to make weekly reports to you, or ‘goings-on’ with these different venders. So, I’ll start off with a good friend…

Chelsey Freyta of Chelsey Freyta Designs is in fact my market partner/person, we share stall no.5. Anyway, she’s come home to Nelson for the summer to visit with her family and expand her line of products (typically, she can be found in Australia with her partner Matt - that’s where he’s from - producing her work which she sells internationally. They were also living in Calgary for the last several months while Matt has been finishing up his Law degree). Chelsey is an illustrator, graphic designer and jewellery maker; taking her intricate drawings of animals, sea creatures and everyday things like teapots - and making them into fab earrings, necklaces and rings. She also has her designs printed onto knickers, headbands and baby clothes (and coming soon - tote bags!). You must check out her stall at the market and visit her website - it’s under construction at the mo - but don’t let that stop ya. www.chelseyfreyta.com. Find her goods for sale at Very Hush Hush too - on Herridge Lane, near All Seasons Cafe.
